Where are we located?

We operate from Arnarstapi, a small village at the tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, located about a 2.5 hour drive (193km) from Reykjavík.

Where do we meet?

We usually meet at the Go west base hut in Arnarstapi. Have a look at our Find Us page.

Do you offer pickup?

No unfortunately we do not offer pickup and we recommend that clients travel to Arnarstapi for tours the night before if possible.

Are there age restrictions?

Yes there are minimum age restrictions for children. This is 12 years old for our glacial summit hikes and 8 years old for all other hikes.

Am I fit enough?

We say the hikes to the summit of Snæfellsjökull glacier are demanding and require a good level of fitness. Of course individual fitness is highly variable and the perception of "good fitness" differs between individuals. The hike itself requires no experience in the mountains or on a glacier but participants have to be fit enough to hike for up to 8 hours on terrain that can be quite steep at times.

What clothes should I wear?

Iceland´s weather changes a lot and so it is difficult to know what you should wear on any particular day. Even in summer we recommend you wear 3 layers (t-shirt, fleece, waterproof jacket) and bring an extra warm layer just incase. You should wear lightweight hiking pants and bring waterproof pants if you have them. Jeans are not recommended as when wet they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear. Remember your sunglasses and sunscreen even during cloudy days because of the high UV and sunlight reflection off of the glacier. Make sure to bring a hat and gloves and a buff/scarf if you have one. It is always better to have warm clothes and not need them, rather than to need warm clothes and not have them.

What footwear should I bring?

For all trips we recommend strong hiking boots (gortex or leather) and for our glacial trips we also recommend that these boots come above your ankles. Remember that on the glacier we wear crampons and these will only fit to hiking boots with a sturdy (semi-rigid) sole. Dont forget your warm wool socks to keep your feet warm and stop blisters.

Can I rent footwear?

Yes you can rent sturdy leather hiking boots from us but please organize this with us in advance via email to make sure that we have your size.

What food/drink should I bring?

For our half day trips we recommend at least 500 - 750 ml of water per person and a light snack (e.g. banana or cereal bar) For our full day trips we recommend at least 1000 - 1500 ml of water per person, 2 light snacks (e.g. banana and a cereal bar) and lunch (e.g. sandwiches and skyr).

Refunds in bad weather?

We do not give refunds if it´s raining and expect that our clients are prepared with waterproof outer layers. If we decide the weather conditions are unsafe though we will cancel or reschedule the trip and if we cancel we will refund you the trip. We advise our clients to stay up to date with changing weather forecasts in the days leading up to their tour departure.

Guided languages?

Our guides primarily speak english and Icelandic. Our office staff do speak spanish and some portguese too.
